Hit and run

SCHENECTADY, NY (March 19, 2025) – Authorities have apprehended a Queens resident in connection with a tragic hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy on Wednesday evening in Schenectady.

Devastating Collision on Crane Street

A young child lost his life after being struck by a fleeing vehicle near the intersection of Crane Street and Chrisler Avenue at approximately 7:40 p.m. According to the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office, the driver did not stop to assist the victim and fled the scene immediately.

Emergency responders transported the critically injured boy to Ellis Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Investigators later identified the suspect as 29-year-old Conroy Simpson of Queens. His vehicle was found abandoned in the Woodlawn area of Schenectady, leading to his arrest. Simpson now faces charges including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, classified as a Class D felony, along with operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

Ongoing Investigation and Appeal for Information

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and urge anyone with relevant details to contact the Tips Line at 518-788-6566.

Hit-and-run accidents remain a persistent issue, with national statistics showing that approximately 11 percent of all crashes involve a driver fleeing the scene. Many offenders believe they can evade responsibility by escaping, but legal consequences often catch up with them.

Legal and Expert Insights

Attorney Candice Bond, a specialist in hit-and-run cases and managing partner at Bond Legal, has highlighted the concerning rise in such incidents. She attributes the trend to distracted driving, often linked to smartphone use, as well as cases where drivers flee due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.

“Proper resources are essential to thoroughly investigate pedestrian accidents and establish negligence,” Bond stated. She emphasized that in addition to law enforcement efforts, legal professionals can provide valuable support through expert testimony, background investigations, and insurance reviews, all of which contribute to ensuring justice for victims.

Potential for a Wrongful Death Claim

Given the circumstances, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. Unlike criminal charges, which are pursued by the government and result in legal penalties, a wrongful death lawsuit is a civil case that allows surviving family members to seek financial compensation for their loss.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, explained, “Families who lose loved ones due to a negligent driver have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which may provide compensation for emotional and financial hardships.”

He further stressed the importance of taking legal action promptly, stating, “The loss of a loved one is not just emotionally devastating but can also create financial strain. It is crucial for families to safeguard their legal rights in the aftermath of such a tragic event.”
