Madurai: A tragic accident on the Virudhunagar-Madurai highway at Melakottai junction near Tirumangalam claimed the life of a passenger and left ten others injured in the early hours of Sunday (March 9, 2025).
The deceased, identified as S. Selvaraj (60) from Krishnapuram near Ambasamudram, was among a group traveling to Keezhasevalpatti near Karaikudi in Sivaganga district to attend a ritual related to a recent death.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 6 a.m. when the speeding van, originating from Ambasamudram, collided with a stationary firewood-laden truck parked by the roadside. The driver reportedly failed to notice the truck in time, resulting in a severe crash.
The impact was fatal for Selvaraj, who succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while ten other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Authorities from the Tirumangalam Taluk police station have launched an investigation into the incident.
