Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, known for her hit song “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and as a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence, tragically passed away in a car accident early Saturday morning. She was 63 years old.
According to her longtime manager Walter Millsap III, Stone was traveling back to Atlanta from Alabama when the vehicle she was in overturned and was then struck by a large truck. Sadly, she was the only one who did not survive the crash.
The Alabama Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened around 4:25 a.m. on Interstate 65, about five miles south of Montgomery. The van, a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, overturned before being hit by a Freightliner truck driven by a 33-year-old man from Texas. Stone was pronounced dead at the scene, while the van’s driver and seven others were taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities are still investigating the incident.
Her children, Diamond and Michael Archer, expressed their deep sorrow, saying they were in shock and struggling to process the loss. Millsap also shared his devastation over the tragedy.
Stone was set to perform at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s basketball championship halftime show on the same day. In her honor, a moment of silence was held during the game, and CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker spoke about her impact, calling her an inspiration.
Throughout her career, Stone created several hit songs, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”, which topped the Billboard Adult R&B chart for 10 weeks, “Baby” featuring Betty Wright, “Brotha”, and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”. She gained popularity in the early 2000s alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Maxwell, and D’Angelo.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her musical journey in the church. She was part of The Sequence, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups, best known for their song “Funk You Up”, which has been sampled by many artists, including Dr. Dre. After her success with The Sequence in the early 1980s, she later joined the group Vertical Hold before launching her solo career.
Her passing is a huge loss to the music industry, and she will be remembered for her contributions to R&B and hip-hop.
