Maine Man Admits to Deadly Hit-and-Run and Attempted Rape

A man from the Town of Maine, Christian Rogler, has admitted to two serious crimes: leaving the scene of a fatal accident and attempted rape.

According to the Broome County District Attorney, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty on Wednesday. These crimes happened in two different incidents.

In late 2021, in Johnson City, Rogler tried to sexually assault a minor. For this, he will be sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervision after his release. He will also have to register as a sex offender, and a final no-contact order will be issued to protect the victim.

In September 2024, in the Town of Dickinson, Rogler hit and killed Jamel Smalls of Binghamton with his vehicle and then fled the scene. He will receive a prison sentence of 2.3 to 7 years, which is the maximum allowed by law.

His sentencing is set for late May, and both sentences will be served at the same time.
